Game 1 (Monday, April 14, 2008)
Randy Johnson (ARI) vs. Jonathan Sanchez (SF)
Giants 5, Diamondbacks 4
L: C. Qualls (0-1)
S: B. Wilson (4)
Randy Johnson made his first start of the season after undergoing a second surgery on his back. He pitched a decent game, but his pitch count was very high for most of the game. He allowed 3 hits and 3 unearned runs over 54 innings. He walked 4 and struck out 7. The D-Backs led when he left, but another error by the defense made a loser of Chad Qualls, who has yet to give up an earned run. Conor Jackson had a double and a homer to go along with his 3 RBI. After a rough start by Jonathan Sanchez, the Giants bullpen allowed only one hit over 4 scoreless innings. Randy Winn went 1-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored in the win.
Game 2 (Tuesday, April 15, 2008)
Micah Owings (ARI) vs. Kevin Correia (SF)
Diamondbacks 8, Giants 2
W: M. Owings (3-0)
L: K. Correia (1-2)
Micah Owings pitched another great game for the Diamondbacks. The D-Backs are the second team to reach double-digit wins this season (Cardinals). Conor Jackson homered for the second straight game, and Chris Young homered as well to lead the offense. Tony Pena and Brandon Lyon both struggled, but Pena was the only one of the two to allow a run. Mark Reynolds did not play because of a tight back. All three of the Giants pitchers allowed at least one run. Eugenio Velez and John Bowker both had two hits for the Giants, who had 7 as a team.
Game 3 (Wednesday, April 16, 2008)
Brandon Webb (ARI) vs. Barry Zito (SF)
Diamondbacks 4, Giants 1
W: B. Webb (4-0)
L: B. Zito (0-4)
S: B. Lyon (3)
Brandon Webb continued his amazing start to the 2008 season with another gem. He threw 8 innings of 3-hit ball, while only allowing one run. He got 14 groundouts, which is why Webb is so effective. Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect ninth for his 3rd save in 5 chances. Webb hit a two-run single in the 2nd inning, and that is all he needed. He also struck out 5, including all three batters in the first inning on 11 pitches. Webb is 4-0 for the first time in his career. Barry Zito, on the other hand, has not been that good lately. His record dropped to 0-4 for the second time in his career. Eugenio Velez had an RBI double to bring home the only run of the game for the Giants. John Bowker and Fred Lewis were the only other players that had a hit for the Giants, who only had 3 in the game. Vinnie Chulk pitched 2 hitless innings in his first appearance of the season.
